Penzance

The name Penzance is thought to originate from the name 'holy headland' and it is one of the oldest towns in the United Kingdom. It is much more than just the regional centre of West Cornwall as it is steeped in history and legend.

Penzance was the first town in England to hear of victory at Trafalgar and it was also pillaged by the remnants of the Spanish Armada. Ironically many of these invaders later settled in the town and some of the local names have a very Spanish feel to them.

Penzance has a diverse range of bars, shops and restaurants both within the town and built around the large harbour. The harbour is always full of fishing and private boats which makes it a very picturesque place to relax with a freshly baked cornish pasty!

The Penzance promenade stretches for over a mile and boasts an unusual listed building. An 'art nouveau' outdoor public swimming pool which fills and empties with the rise and fall of the tide!

There are many reputedly haunted buildings in Penzance so beware, a visit to Chapel Street may bring you face to face with a ghost!
