| St Ives is one of the most famous towns in Cornwall
and this is reflected by the bustling and lively atmosphere found
there at all times of the year.
Originally Cornwall's biggest pilchard port St Ives became famous
when painters found that the unique watery light of West Cornwall
provided them with the artistic inspiration to produce some remarkable
paintings during the latter part of last century.
St Ives is still popular among artists today and has a distinctively
bohemian atmosphere. It is this artistic heritage that prompted
the Tate to build a sister gallery in the town and it has quickly
established itself as a showpiece of modern art. The affiliated
Barbara Hepworth museum nearby has a fine collection of sculptures
and an unusual garden.
St Ives has its own sandy beach within the harbour mouth which is
quite extensive at low tide, there is also an incredible variety
of shops in the town offering everything from Cornish fudge to surfwear!
Despite being a popular resort St Ives maintains its charm. St Ives
is just 5 miles by car from Tolroy making it perfect for day trips
and evenings out. |
